  prized and finest wild silk, muga or golden silk as it is popularly known. Naturally rich golden in colour its botanical name is Antherea assama, a caterpillar which feeds on leaves of Som (Machilus bombycina) and Soalu trees (Litsaea polyantha).  
  A wild caterpillar reared outdoors it produces the beautiful exotic and strongest natural textile fiber known. A traditional industry dating back to ancient times, Muga is exclusive only to Assam and not produced any where in the world.

Assam, the premier state of the North Eastern India is not only rich in raw materials like Jute, Silk, Cane, Bamboo, Straw, Bell Metal, etc. but also rich in skillful Artisans, Weavers and Craftsmen.
